Astryx

Meta's open-source React system, matured for eight years inside the company across more than 13,000 apps and released publicly in 2026. Built on StyleX, it ships 180+ components, seven themes, a CLI and an MCP server for AI agents.

Why we like it

Astryx is the first system from a company at Meta's scale that treats AI agents as a first-class consumer. It ships a built-in MCP server, so tools like Claude Code and Cursor can query the component catalog, discover layout templates and read prop contracts through a typed API rather than scraping documentation pages. For teams moving toward agent-assisted UI work, that quietly changes what "docs" has to mean.

Underneath, it runs on StyleX, Meta's compile-time CSS engine, which keeps the runtime cost low and the output predictable. The theming surface is the other thing to notice: seven pre-built themes, Neutral, Stone, Butter, Chocolate, Matcha, Gothic and Y2K, all swappable at the brand level and fully customizable. It's unusually generous for a system from a company of this size, and it signals that Meta expects consumers to re-skin rather than deploy as-is.

Where it fits

Astryx fits React web teams that want a production-grade component library with real theming built in, and that expect to work alongside AI coding agents. It's a useful one to weigh for new products choosing between shadcn/ui, Material UI or something larger and Meta-maintained.

Important to know: it's React and web only, there's no React Native or non-React port, and it's in public beta so the surface will keep moving. StyleX is a compile-time step too, so teams on build toolchains that can't accommodate it will have more work to do than teams on Next.js or Vite.

Ideas to borrow

  1. 01.

    AI-readiness

Ship an MCP server alongside the documentation site, so agents can query components, props and templates through a typed API instead of parsing HTML.

  2. 02.

    Theming

Publish several named, opinionated themes out of the box rather than one neutral default, so consumers see what the theming system can actually do before they build their own.

  3. 03.

    Distribution

Pair the component library with a CLI that handles scaffolding, theme installation and component scoping, so onboarding is a single command rather than a copy-paste walkthrough.
